1. As the women who were hired for SQW were employed on a part-time basis it being a start-up, many who joined us couldn’t sustain giving time for this work. Sooner or later they would leave saying they don’t get enough time from their regular work so there is no time for this additional work. Also, they needed immediate benefits for them to sustain their interest in this work. Promised future benefits didn’t interest them.
Therefore I needed to create a system by which they have a choice to work from their own home which would give them flexibility with time. Also creating completed products at home could be exchanged for money immediately. They would need starter kits.
2. There was a sense of community being formed as they worked and learned together. A relaxed and creative time that they didn’t get the chance to have anywhere else. Creating objects of beauty gave them fulfilment which was visible through their smiles and interest to do more. On being interviewed they expressed how much they are enjoying themselves. This creative work is having a positive impact on their mental well-being.
3. No matter how hard and drab their lives are their grit to improve their situation makes them happy to accept as much work as possible.
4. Although they were able to create beautiful products from materials purchased, the idea that equally beautiful handmade products could be made from scrap cloth and other materials which we would upcycle/ recycle is a big consideration for me for ‘Hands of Shakti’.
