Literacy India x Hands of Shakti - Workshop

Updated: 5 days ago

Literacy India is a well-established NGO dedicated to creating self-sufficient communities by empowering underprivileged children, youth, and women through education, skill development, and holistic growth.

We visited Literacy India's school in Palam Vihar to conduct a workshop centred around the power of belief and the idea that one’s Shakti (Strength) lies within their own hands. As part of the activity, we provided each child with an A3-sized poster featuring the statement: “I have power in my hands”, and “The power lies within me”. A blank space was intentionally left in the middle for them to imprint their own palms with paint, so that the message could be more personalised.

To further enhance their connection to the concept of self-empowerment, we distributed small cloth flowers handcrafted by the women of Hands of Shakti. We explained the significance of these flowers as symbols of financial independence and resilience. Through this, the children, especially the girls present, gained an understanding of the importance of financial independence.

These posters are now personal affirmations that will serve as reminders of their inner Shakti during moments of doubt. To ensure they could easily display them at home, we put double-sided tape to the back of each one.

What struck me the most was how incredibly well-mannered and engaged the children were. They responded to the activity with enthusiasm, fully grasping its message. At the end of the session, we distributed toffees.  When we realised we had a surplus and offered them more, they politely declined, expressing gratitude for what they had. Their contentment and humility made me realise how even with so little one can express gratitude.
