After procuring a significant amount of cloth flowers, I began thinking about how to present these creations as products that could be sold to create a sustainable way to contribute to the financial stability for the women involved. One concept that came to mind was to transform these flowers into pieces of art. Art is unique in
its ability to carry emotional and cultural significance, which makes it difficult to set a definitive price. This very attribute allows for a higher value to be placed on each piece, offering an opportunity to create greater financial support for the Hands of Shakti project. This would fund the continuation of this project by enabling us to work with more women over an extended period of time.
The guiding idea behind these artworks is to use minimalist symbols such as eyes, lips, and simple geometric shapes like squares or grids to ensure the emphasis remains on the flowers themselves. These symbols act as a backdrop to highlight the intricate skill and attention to detail in each flower, serving as a canvas that elevates the women’s work without overshadowing it.

As the artist creating and curating these pieces, my role is different this time; rather than creating something entirely new, I am focusing on showcasing and amplifying the women’s creations. I want the art to tell their stories and to be a reflection of the resilience, skill, as well as beauty that these women have infused into their work. These pieces of art are meant to represent more than just visual appeal; they are symbolic of the strength and potential of the women behind them.
In addition to the art pieces I created, the rest of my team contributed by crafting Bandhanwars (a traditional Indian decorative item) , and diaries adorned with the same cloth flowers. These products were designed to offer a range of price points, ensuring that we had more accessible items for sale at exhibitions. The idea is to give everyone the chance to support the women involved, even if they are not inclined to invest in the higher-priced art pieces. Moreover, these items are simpler and quicker for us to produce, providing an opportunity for more frequent sales and consistent support for the women.
